Object
Section titled “Object”An Object is a note with a defined shape. Every Object has exactly one Object Type and can also have a body written in the block editor. Books, people, meetings, tasks, and images are all Objects.
Learn more: Objects and Object Types
Object Type
Section titled “Object Type”An Object Type, usually just “Type”, defines the shape of the Objects that use it: which properties and relations they have, whether they have a body, and how they look. Every Object has exactly one Type, which can inherit from a single parent Type. You can use Lar’s built-in Types or define your own.
Learn more: Create and edit an Object Type
Property
Section titled “Property”A property is a typed field on an Object, such as a date, number, checkbox, or label. A Type declares its properties, so every Object of that Type has the same fields.
Loose property
Section titled “Loose property”A loose property is a one-off field on a single Object that is not part of its Type. Loose properties are not inherited and are not included in typed property queries. Add the field to the Type when you find yourself repeating it.
Relation
Section titled “Relation”A relation is a typed link from one Object to others, such as a Book’s Author pointing to a Person. A relation declares which Type it points to and whether it holds one link or many.
Learn more: Relations and backlinks
Backlink
Section titled “Backlink”A backlink shows that another Object links to the one you are viewing. Backlinks appear automatically when another Object mentions it with [[Title]], tags it, or links to it through a relation, so you can see where each Object is referenced.

A Mixin is a reusable bundle of properties that you can add to several Types without relating them by inheritance. The built-in Taskable Mixin, for example, gives a Type a done flag, due date, and recurrence, and mixin:Taskable finds every Object that has it.
Learn more: Apply Mixins to a Type
A facet is a bundle of properties attached to an individual Object rather than to a whole Type, such as a “Loaned” facet on one Book. In the app, a facet is attached automatically when a Label property takes a particular value, and detached when the value changes.
Learn more: Mixins, the Type-level equivalent
A tag is an Object of its own. Writing #reading links the current Object to a Tag Object named “reading”, which has its own page and shows every Object connected to it. Use tags for topics that cut across Types.
Collection
Section titled “Collection”A Collection is a hand-picked list of Objects of one Type and its subtypes. Adding an Object to a Collection doesn’t change the Object, and removing it doesn’t delete it.
Template
Section titled “Template”A template is a starting state for new Objects of a Type: pre-filled property values and, when the Type has a body, starter content. A template does not change the Type itself.
Formula
Section titled “Formula”A formula is a property whose value is calculated from the Object’s other properties instead of typed in. It is read-only and recalculated whenever the Object is shown.
Learn more: Formula properties
Capture
Section titled “Capture”A Capture is an item you saved or received through a capture channel, such as Quick Capture, the clipboard, or the share sheet. It waits in the Captures queue until you convert it to an Object, archive it, or dismiss it.
Learn more: Process your Captures
Workflow
Section titled “Workflow”A workflow is a rule that connects a trigger, such as a new Capture or a changed Object, to a series of actions. Workflows can suggest actions for you to approve or run automatically.
Learn more: Create and manage workflows
Workspace
Section titled “Workspace”A workspace is the local boundary around your Objects, Types, search index, settings, and encryption keys. Every workspace starts on your device; sync and sharing are optional.
Learn more: Local-first and encryption
Shared workspace
Section titled “Shared workspace”A workspace converted so a group of people jointly own it, each with a role (Owner, Admin, Can edit, Can view, or Guest) that governs what they can do. Distinct from sharing a single Object with another account.
A view is a way of displaying a set of Objects, such as a list, table, board, calendar, or gallery. A Saved View stores a query together with a chosen layout so you can reopen it later.
Learn more: Layouts and Saved Views
An alias is an alternate name for one Object. Aliases are included in search and help links find the right Object, but the Object keeps a single canonical title.
TQL, short for Typed Query Language, is Lar’s text syntax for finding Objects by Type, tag, property, and text, for example type:Book tag:reading.
